Provide Feedback

Supervising and Tutoring

Throughout training, trainees progress through a series of rotations/ terms/ posts which last between three to six months.  These are intended to provide a broad range of experiences in all clinical areas. The majority of these posts are in public hospitals however, training may also take place in private settings.

There are a number of College Fellows involved in supervision and clinical tutoring. This team includes the Director of Training, the supervisor and clinical tutors.

The Director of Training is a Fellow appointed by the College to manage the training network, working in cooperation with the regional QEC chairman, College managers and network hospital administrators. The Director of Training assists the post supervisor, charts the progress and performance of each trainee, establishes processes to identify early any trainee performance that needs extra support, and develops and implements a development plan and, ensures that each trainee is given accurate and comprehensive feedback on their performance.

The supervisor for each post works with their team of clinical tutors and more broadly with the Regional QEC Chair, Director of Training and College managers to identify and document trainee progress in relation to the College curriculum performance standards. During the rotation supervisors meet with the trainee to plan their learning and development. At the end of every rotation the supervisor consults with the clinical tutors on the trainee’s progress, and feedback is given to the trainee. This is then recorded on an end of term form which the trainee sends to the College.

The clinical tutor holds a hospital appointment and facilitates the trainee’s professional and personal development, whilst ensuring safe and appropriate care for patients, according to the College's performance standards. There is usually more than one clinical tutor during each term.

The trainee takes on progressively greater responsibility, consistent with individual growth in clinical experience, knowledge and skill throughout their training.

Role descriptions have been developed for the College Fellows involved in managing the training network, as the Director of Training and also for the Supervisors and Clinical Tutors.
