About IODR

Establishment of the International Ophthalmology Development Register (IODR) has been made possible through the partnership between RANZCO and The Fred Hollows Foundation. RANZCO seeks to improve access to its own resources to further assist the development and coordination of eye health care capacity in the Asia-Pacific region through the creation of IODR.

Approximately 284 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 245 have low vision. About 90% of the world's visually impaired people live in developing countries. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for 73% of moderate to severe visual impairment and 58% of blindness. (World Health Organisation, www.who.int)

The IODR will contribute to the prevention of avoidable blindness in the Asia Pacific region by recording the expertise and interests of Fellows and trainees (5th year) and matching them with the needs and opportunities offered by international educational ophthalmology institutions, training hospitals and international non-government organisations.

The IODR includes good practice guidelines for Fellows and trainees intending to volunteer in a developing country, aligned with Vision2020: The Right to Sight goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020. It also includes opportunities for international medical graduates in the Asia-Pacific region to undertake Fellowships/Observerships in Australasian teaching hospitals and institutions.

Strengthening of institutional training capacity for ophthalmology and the training of ophthalmic personnel in developing (or low and middle resource) countries comprise various activities and can be achieved in various ways. Ranging from regular visits aimed at continued medical education through to fellowships abroad, the provision of external examiners, or the creation of a complete training program.
