The GP Upskilling Programs
What are the GP Upskilling workshops? The purpose of the GP Upskilling workshop is to assist general practitioners master common eye skills such as fundoscopy, use of the slit lamp, difficult corneal foreign body removal, incision of meibonian cysts, oculokinetic perimetry and visual screening in children and adults.
The curriculum was fine-tuned with a GP and ophthalmologist College member from every state, and has been "rolled out" across the country. In pilots in South Australia and Queensland, Divisions of General Practice have provided the ideal vehicle to accomplish this. RANZCO have identified ophthalmologists within each Division of General Practice in Australia, who would be keen to assist with the workshop. The aim is to use a small group approach with set learning objectives and an interactive and practical format. The program has been reviewed by medical educators within the RACGP and aims to provide core GP eye skills, which can be built upon with further Divisional CME activity. Each State has appointed both a RACGP and RANZCO coordinator to assist with the establishment of the workshops. See who the State Coordinators are.
It is envisaged that each Division would choose a time and venue that would suit them and arrange attendance and workshop staging. The RANZCO facilitators may be able to recruit appropriate patients to demonstrate interesting signs and supervise skills.
The modules described in the available text fit neatly into a weekend up-skilling format. Click here to send a request for a copy of the workbook and/or other resources for the program. This is not to say that all must be chosen or that other topics cannot be included. This should be up to local GPs and ophthalmologists and their state coordinators to implement.
One of the primary aims of the Workshop is to facilitate ongoing liaison between local ophthalmologists and GPs - both in terms of continuing education and improved health care delivery locally. The Workshop should provide a starting point, which can be built upon with further skill acquisition. This has occurred in a number of pilots.
The Workshop design is not static. If you have suggestions on improvements or modifications, please pass them on the your state coordinators. If you are looking for information that is designed to be used by ophthalmologists for planned lectures or related courses. GP Upskilling State Coordinators list (as at 28 May 2002)
